Phobias
Introduction
Ken's Story
A phobia is an excessive and unreasonable fear of something. It can be anything, for
example blood, injections, dogs, high buildings, spiders, snakes, etc. When a person
is exposed to the feared subject intense anxiety results. The person usually realizes
that the fear is unreasonable but cannot control the emotional responses he/she experience.
The fear usually affects the person's functioning in a very bad way.
People with phobias are advised to start Inner Child Therapy. This unreasonable fear can
be treated satisfactory. The fear started in childhood and it is a great relief for a
person to finally be free from the phobia after so many years.
Ken was afraid of grass for as long as he could remember. When Ken was still a small
child his fear of grass cheated him out of many friendships. "It stole my childhood", he
says. As a little boy Ken could not compete with his friends in sport. His fear of grass
made him think of excuses to not play for example rugby. At first the teachers tried to
persuade him and later used force to get him onto the grass, but when they saw the intense
fear and heard the screams, they accepted it.
As the years went by Ken had to think of other plans to keep his bare feet off grass. He
could handle walking on grass if he had his shoes and socks on - only then. At the age of
45 Ken had enough of this phobia. He was frustrated because for the first time in his
life he wanted to play with his little girl on the grass, but the fear kept him from it.
For many years Ken tried to think his way out of his fear, but had no success.
Ken started Inner Child Therapy. To his own astonishment Ken discovered that his fear
started when he was only 18 months old. As a baby he stayed with an aunt during the day.
This caregiver suffered from depression and did not have the energy to look after an
energetic little boy. She needed the money, however, so she made a plan.
Whenever Ken wanted to go outside and play, his aunt would warn him: "Don't go outside...
there are spiders in the grass. These spiders bite little boys' toes. Don't go outside...
watch out for your toes".
The 18 month old little boy had a huge scare. Whenever he wanted to go outside, his aunt
would reinforce this fear with the same words. Little Ken was taught to be scared of going
outside. His subconscious mind solved the problem by having him believe that the danger
was in the grass. As long as he kept off the grass he would be safe. As Ken got older
he could not consciously remember anything about his aunt scaring him like this. The only
thing he knew for sure was to keep off the grass.
Ken continued his therapy and soon got relief. It was not long before he could play with
his little girl on the grass. Ken felt as if somebody let him out of jail.
